Reflections

Imagine for me if you will
All the world as one giant pane
Whose dewed face we with drawings fill
Though our marks be soon dewed again.
If you had your own piece therein
What lines would you make known to men
That they might in your leave copy
The picture you had made them see?

How would you learn to etch those lines;
By drawing from those masters known?
Or would you try your own designs -
And live and die by those alone?
Could you write your heart on that glass,
Knowing to others it would pass,
And knowing not what they would do
To alter it, to alter you?

Would you with neighbors mural-make,
Or, solo, try a star to be;
And thus a common cause forsake
In search of immortality?
Could you with greatness border keep
And help that artist glory reap
By lining their lines with your glow
To try to better future sow?

If such a life were yours to live
With given breath and borrowed space
To whom would you your last breath give
What art would you with hand retrace?
For what is love but given breath
When we ourselves are close to death
And what is friendship but a hand
That helps when we, dew, can’t withstand.
